I spent around 4-5 hours yesterday working on my first song for the cd - Unbinded. I have everything recorded, but adjusting the eq's, the effects( reverb, delay ), the relative volumes and compression to get a balanced mix is really tough. I probably spent 35% of the time recording, and I've spent the other 65% just trying to get the mix put together well. My monitors aren't the greatest, so I'm sure they are coloring the sound, and the room is not ideal at all for mixing. I can't wait until I have my music room set up in my new house; it should make all of this much easier. As soon as that happens, I'm going to take a lot of pictures of the new setup. In the mean time, I have to keep going back and forth between my main computer and music room to test the music. If I get it to sound good on the music computer, it doesn't sound good on the main computer. I think the key will be to understand what my monitors are doing to color the sound, and adjusting for that so it sounds better on my main computer. Making music is a never ending learning process... I completely respect artists and sound engineers who make it seem easy. I will keep working until I'm happy with it. Once I am, be on the lookout for my music page to be up and running with a flash music player. It should start playing Unbinded( and other songs to follow ) as soon as the song is finished. Speaking of great artists, check out this series to see Jason Mraz working on songs for his new album. |
