The Google Play App Deal of the Week is "Songsterr" today.

Seems to be a good app and deal for guitarists and bassists. Maybe someone is interested in the app here but that's not why I'm posting it.

In the tabs with text the app uses "|" in the text to additionally emphasize the chord changes.

I was thinking "Why not use that for a semi grid in the text?" So that every 4 beats there's a "|" to indicate a new measure. Very simple idea actually. Has this been discussed (and discarded) anywhere?

That's already possible. You can easily type | within the lyrics. If you prefer measure bars between the chords use [|]. ChordPro takes care to place the measure bar above that position of the lyrics where you inserted it.
