Ancient one here with brand-new Surface Pro (6) and MS Pro.

I'd like to flip from a 1 or 2 page sheet back to the Collections list with ONE touch or swipe.  It works OK if I set MS to bottom middle which brings up Windows task bar and then touch the left arrow, but would prefer just one swipe if possible.

I'd like to know if that is "best that it can do" or advise what setup option to try.

If you go to Settings->Touch & Pedal Settings->Touch Actions, you can assign a touch action to one of the corners or top/bottom to "Return to Library". Let me know if that will work for you.
