That's the question (above). Is there an app that runs on my iMac and can at least list the contents of a MSP backup file?

Not without running the companion application through an emulator on your iMac unfortunately. I do plan on developing a version of the companion app that runs on iMac (especially once the iPad version is available). I know sciurius has a series of tools he has developed (https://github.com/sciurius/MSPro-Tools), so if you can run the perl scripts on iMac, that might be one thing to consider.
