Setlist preview: Songbook vs. Mobilesheets
#1
Hello to everyone,

my band is currently in the process of switching from the “Songbook” app to the “Mobilesheets” app.
So far there's no problem, except for one thing that we're missing in "Mobilesheets":

In Songbook you can get a quick overview of a playlist content (= setlist) by tapping on the playlist. The songs are previewed on the right as you can see in this screenshot:

However, this doesn't seem to work in Mobilesheets:

The setlist must be opened each time in order to see its content and then you have to exit it again to tap on another setlist.
Is there a way in Mobilesheets to preview the setlist contents in a fast way like there is in Songbook?

I'm grateful for every hint.

Best regards

If you tap a setlist to view the list of songs in that setlist (without actually loading the setlist), you can swipe left to right to go back to the top list or tap the setlists tab to go to the top list. I don't currently supported multiple panes side-by-side in the app.

Thank you so much. I didn't know this, and it's very useful!

Anyway it would be great to have implemented  the above mentioned function of Songbook in Mobilesheets, too.

Adding a preview page for the songs tab along with an option to have a separate pane for setlists and other group types is certainly on my list of things to do in the future.

Thank you, I really appreciate.

One last question:
Does your above mention workaround "you can swipe left to right to go back to the top list or tap the setlists tab to go to the top list" also apply to iPadOS ?

I don't have an iPad at the moment, so I can't check it. But there are plans to buy one.

The tapping the setlists tab at the top does, but the swiping does not. iOS supports swiping list entries right or left to display delete/edit options, which is not supported on Android or Windows, as it's built into Apple's list component. So I couldn't support both the swiping entries for those options while also supporting swiping to return to the previous list on iOS.

Personally I don't think it is useful or necessary.  Name your setlists correctly and basta

I can see that when exploring software, especially after converting, missing features can seem an issue, but I keep being surprised at how many features MS does have.

So I agree that set list previews are a bit pointless, but I also wonder if this is because the software that the OP is coming from hasn't got the same features for collections so to organise things you end up using setlists?

So perhaps the OP needs to understand how collections, custom groups and other features allow you to manage songs.

In other words, what problem is the OP trying top solve with the Setlist preview?

As I work across 4 different groups, having a clear plan for organising the music, which has both compatible and incompatible overlaps, is important. Understanding the MS way (or ways) would improve their song management.

I can see that if you are using setlists for library organisation then the original query makes sense, but if they use collections and other fields (I use custom group as Instrument) then the problem they are trying to solve might already have a MobileSheets solution that might work better. If I am exploring then filtering by Collection (essentially which band) and by instrument soon gets the collection down to a manageable size, and then the various search features of MS make it easy to navigate.

Hm, though I don't see an immediate need for the request I was looking at the library quick viewer (just tested under Win10 though) and you can choose setlists from the dropdown menu.

Though unexpectedly there aren't any setlists shown in the libary window after that.

Mike, is this a bug?

Because, when it is one and the library window is intended to work similar to the way you can view collections in it, then it is almost what the OP requested (yes, 1 or 2 taps more, still pretty convenient and quick) without you having to change anything big in the program (I guess).

I'm not sure how to reproduce what you are describing. If I bring up the library window in the Windows version of MobileSheets, then tap the dropdown and switch to "Setlists", all of the setlists are shown like I would expect. Is there anything I'm missing?

Thanks,
Mike

I don't know. Or I'm missing something.

I tested on my second Win device. Same result.

If I open a song that isn't in any setlist (from the song tab), open the library window and choose setlists the window stays empty/white.
If I open a song that is in a setlist (from the song tab), open the library window and choose setlists it show the content of the setlist the song is in.

I don't get a window where all setlists are shown. Strange.

P.S. On my iPad it works exactly like I expected (and what I consider a good alternative for what banjogit wants).

So banjogit, have you tried the library window with setlists if it might suffice for your purposes?

Mike, what do you need from me to figure out the windows behaviour on my devices?

We can start by having you export your settings (Settings->Backup and Restore->Export Settings) and send that .mcf to mike@zubersoft.com. That's the easiest first step (compared to a full library backup).

Thanks,
Mike
