I've got StaffPad, and it's pretty good! It's got it's kinks, as does any new program, but I'm using it to arrange a piece for my quintet with little issues.

have you tested the playback engine? I was wondering how well it will play an orchestration. I am presuming this is the highest CPU drain. I would be looking at scoring almost a full orchestra (all strings, all woodwind but partial brass, a little percussion). Playback is not essential though but I am just curious because I would have to decide on which Surface and CPU. I see they recommend i5.

The playback isn't great. I think it's a little better than standard midi...but not much so (I also haven't used standard midi for a long while...I also have Finale 2012 and had 2008 previously). It's no where near as good as the Garritan orchestra though.

Midi playback is only as good as the sound engine you are using. If you're not happy with the sounds, then the only option is to change it.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry, I was actually wondering about the playback engine being able to play all the notes (not the quality of the samples themselves). Full tutti, trills and runs, will it stop or break up? I know it is related to tempo and how many instruments are playing but practically does it work (mostly?)
