Edit fields directly?
#1
Hi Mike,
the title is a bit obscure, sorry.

In the deep recesses of my mind I seem to recall the old version of Companion allowing you to edit entries in a column as if each line was a cell in a spreadsheet.

Am I imagining that or was it real?

What I'm hoping for is the ability to put a cursor in a column and just edit the contents of that column for each song.

E.G. - Say I want to edit the Custom field for each song in a collection.  Select that field for the first song, make my change, move to the next song (<DnArrow>?), make the next change etc..  Think moving down cells in a spreadsheet, making changes as you go.

If that is how it was, can we have it back please?  If I'm imagining things, is it something we can get please?  As it is now, I have to <RtClick>, select edit, navigate to the field, change the field contents, and click OK, rinse and repeat...

For my particular use case, in one library I have about 2800 songs, just over 2000 of which are in three particular collections that happened to be CSV imports.  They were the first CSVs I ever built for MS and poor choices were made Wink  If I didn't want to keep the existing database entries in order to maintain the integrity of some set lists, and more importantly crop and annotation data, I'd just modify the CSVs, delete the songs and re-import.  If I have to do it the long way it's gonna get old real fast Smile

I have never supported that with the companion app. It just presents a lot of problems to support that, as all of the data validation and parsing, error handling, handling of multiple values and data updates would have to be either duplicated or rearchitected to be accessible from the main list display. There is then also UI issues I would have to address - auto-completion during text entry would not easy to support and different fields require different types of data (i.e. tempos and duration), requiring even more changes. Not all fields are editable either, as some of them are only for display purposes. So I would need to see a significant number of users asking for this capability before I would consider the level of effort required for it.

Please do not forget that you can rename group entries, and you can also batch edit to modify multiple entries at once.

Hi Mike,
I wondered if my memory was fooling me.  I'll think about what I was doing that made me think that was the case, but it certainly isn't worth going to the trouble you've mentioned - I'll probably just junk the cropping, annotations and setlists and re-import with an improved CSV file.

Just quickly though, batch updates wont work for this particular situation as every song must have the title changed AND the data removed from the title added to the Custom field to achieve what I want.

Thanks for taking the time to correct me.

Thank you.  I'll check 'em out after Christmas - between now and then I think I just might have enough spare time to scratch myself, but only once mind you.  Big Grin
