The first post shows how to disable it easily but the 2nd (3rd?) post implies that this is longer possible and you have to use a registry hack to disable it (I didn't investigate further)

Thanks, Geoff. See my reply to myself. As I was following your strategy (before reading it), it suddenly occurred to me that Cortana (much as I hate her) was not the problem. My own swiping technique was calling forth the Notifications window deliberately, Cortana notwithstanding.
