If you have automatic updating enabled then you don't need to check play store.
If you don't have it enabled (I'd recommend this to avoid an unexpected update immediately before a gig) then yes, you need to check play store every now and again but surely that would only be on an occasional basis when it suits you to upgrade i.e. this is not "constantly" checking. In fact, assuming you are not experiencing problems and MS is doing what you want then checking play store once per month is probably sufficent.
