It is possible to do that, but you won't be able to control the orientation of the external display (that's my understanding at least). So this can lead to undesirable results as the phone won't use the full space on the monitor and will put black bars on each side. Hopefully other users will share their experience. I think it may work okay if the phone is in landscape though. You can see some sites discuss this connectivity:

If you watch the YouTube video, you'll see the issue with the black bars around 40 seconds in while the phone is in portrait. In landscape, it works much better. You can see later in the video where it discusses the inability to rotate the screen on some phones. You then have to use a rotation app to get around this. Other users have certainly reported this on the forums in the past, so it's something to keep in mind. I read some comments that indicate that the Android phone needs to support MHL in order to have a direct HDMI connection a monitor. There is also apparently an Android MHL tester app on Google Play (but I haven't researched that further).
