So, I tried some other jpegs. These ones came from book scans done with my SmartPhone's camera, and the color shift problem is not there.   Maybe we are dealing with some obscure compatibility thing. The amount of contrast in the jpegs might also be affecting this, as in the software cannot tell where the whitespace is.   I will play with the file processing on my end to see if I can figure it.
