I would like you to stick with the USB-C to USB-B cable, as you absolutely should be able to get that to work. I'd like you to do the following:
1) Go to Settings->MIDI Settings->Configure MIDI Connections
2) Switch the MIDI library to "Google"
3) When the input and output ports for the HX Stomp show up, tap them and it should show "Connected" next to each
4) Now test out the MIDI functionality
Let me know if that works any better. If not, you can also try the third MIDI library, which is high-performance USB. The reason I support multiple libraries is because there are so many combinations of Android and MIDI devices and I have found that different users will have success with different MIDI libraries.
