Single Staff in Annotations
#1
I realize there is the "Piano Staff" but single staffs would be a nice addition (maybe as a drop down) as a selection as not everyone needs both staffs and it takes up more room on a sheet.

A question regarding the Piano Staff:

I recently added a couple of Piano Staffs to a ChordPro sheet to notate some melody lines. I used the Stamp Tool to create the notes and accidentals and positioned them where needed, however IF I want to move the location of the Piano Staff on the page, the staff moves but the notes don't.

Is there any way to move everything?

Thanks in advance for any help or consideration of my single staff request.

I agree with a single staff option.  (Of course, I would love an easier way to notate in it too (i.e., easily select the duration and pitch so it automatically shows up on the staff)).

Please add this as a feature, and please let us choose from a variety of clefs! Seems like a no-brainer

It's definitely on the list of things to do. With all of the major changes that were made to the annotations functionality with version 3.0.0, it was basically a first pass to get everything in place and working that users needed. I also wanted to see which things were important to users, and which were not. I had no idea if the piano staff tool would really be useful to people, so it's great to hear that people are using it and would like more options.

I understand that people seem to want more and more features that are normal in a sheet music composition app. However, I don't want to go too far down that rabbit hole, as there are a ton of other things that still need to be implemented first that provide significant value for the core purpose of the app. I realize that it would be convenient for people to be able to quickly place notes on the staff, transpose notes, add time signatures, etc, etc, but if you need that kind of functionality, it's probably better to use an app specifically designed for that and just export the output to PDF. You can use apps like Musescore, Lilipond, Staffpad, Finale, etc which are going to give you any feature you could ever want for composition. I'm happy to provide simple features to assist people with quick modifications or additions, but I want to set expectations properly for what I have planned in that regard.

I have no problems adding options to pick from a variety of clefs. I know other users want more options for dynamic tools for placing things like slurs. While it's a no-brainer to want to support these things, the level of effort for each one should not be underestimated or trivialized. A lot more goes into each one than it seems. Once the framework is in place for generically supporting different kinds of clefs, then it probably isn't terribly difficult to add an additional one. The current way I designed the piano staff doesn't really help with achieving that goal though. I'm going to need to refactor the code a bit to make it easier to insert new kinds of vector graphics-based tools so that I can add alto clef, base clef, treble clef, tenor clef, blank staff lines, or perhaps things for different instruments that I haven't even considered yet. The piano staff feature was sort of a proof-of-concept so that I could see how it would work out and if users would like the way it functioned. Now that it seems to be something users are utilizing and want more options for, I have no problem putting in the additional work to expand it to support more types of tools.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks, Mike. Understood.

Thanks Mike and I agree with not going down the rabbit hole of music notation with MobileSheets.

In my application I had no choice but to use the tools available because I was attempting to add a staff to a ChordPro sheet versus a PDF. If adding an image file to a ChordPro sheet was somehow supported or the SNIP Tool, I would have preferred that even if it doesn't do the transposition thing.

Thanks again!

+1 for single staff.

I imagine the majority of instruments use a single staff, instead of the grand staff.

Absolutely, +1 for me for a single staff.

Thank you, Mike, for such an excellent program.

I too would love a single staff, but for me it seems like it would be most useful if it were a "shape" that I could extend to whatever length I need.  No need for clefs, etc.. I would just write in that sort of information, plus, if you're just adding alternate lines, or arrangement ideas to a lead sheet or existing part, the clef, key, and time signature are implied.  Right now I make 5 lines with the shape tool, but it is a little cumbersome and hard to make them even and straight.

Well, for a workaround for now:

Why don't you use the pianostaff, drag it to the length you want and afterwards just cut out (and don't paste) the bottom staff with the snipping tool?

Cutting with the snipping tool is the same as just placing a white rectangle over the area on the page. This is non-destructive, whereas the snipping tool will actually alter the underlying PDF. So it's better to just place a rectangle if that is the desire.

I do plan on adding more dynamic tool options so that users can place slurs, staff lines, just one clef at a time, etc.

A single blank staff with no clef, time or key signature, measure lines, etc would be perfect for my use! I often want to add notes or a line from other trumpet parts where I need to cover for them or just add bits from a D.S or coda when there's a wacky page turn.

I am a happy new Mobile Sheets user and I just read this older post on Staff revisions additions.
It appears that little has been changed since that post.

A workaround could be to create the needed leadline in a composing app, create a PDF of the score, import into Mobile sheets as a song then snip and paste into the desired document.

Let me know how it works.
