Sorry about the clumsy title.  To add some more coherence to it ...

Is it possible to for MobileSheets to run on an Android phone (say a Samsung/Verizon phone) and display via HDMI cable (with adapter for the phone port) on a large (say 14") touchscreen monitor?

Is anyone currently doing this?  Has anyone tried it?

It is possible to do that, but you won't be able to control the orientation of the external display (that's my understanding at least). So this can lead to undesirable results as the phone won't use the full space on the monitor and will put black bars on each side. Hopefully other users will share their experience. I think it may work okay if the phone is in landscape though. You can see some sites discuss this connectivity:

If you watch the YouTube video, you'll see the issue with the black bars around 40 seconds in while the phone is in portrait. In landscape, it works much better.  You can see later in the video where it discusses the inability to rotate the screen on some phones. You then have to use a rotation app to get around this. Other users have certainly reported this on the forums in the past, so it's something to keep in mind. I read some comments that indicate that the Android phone needs to support MHL in order to have a direct HDMI connection a monitor. There is also apparently an Android MHL tester app on Google Play (but I haven't researched that further).

Apparently it depends on the monitor.  Some support "vertical" or "portrait" mode.  Just need to see if an affordable one does, but I'm looking at a description of one now (Unify y) that seems to list for ~ $240.

Now that I'm looking at this, my second thought is that if an Android phone can display MobilSheets "correctly" on an external (HDMI) display, a better way to go would just be a larger touchscreen monitor in standard landscape orientation and using 2-page display.  And THAT seems like something I can experiment with on the equipment I have.

Well, I don't want it merely to display on another device (e.g., a monitor). I want to be able to control MobileSheets from that display device, just as from an attached tablet screen on a tablet.  Think of the phone as a mini-tablet with a mini-screen, but interacting with the larger screen.  Basically, I want the "other device" in this case to become the phone's screen -- touch and all -- so I can fully control MobileSheets from that screen.  This would replace a tablet running MS with a phone/screen combination.

It appears to be potentially doable with a "portable touchscreen monitor" (with it's own battery, and so no need to be plugged into a power supply) and an HDMI connection through an adapter to the phone USB port -- IF the phone can pitch the right image at the touchscreen monitor.  I'm a bit skeptical of that since I suspect the phone may be to stupid to do that.  But if I get a USB-C/HDMI adapter I should be able to test it pretty straightforwardly.

ScreenStream appears to be a remote (one-way, no interaction) presentation app.

I've tried this a lot. Can't get portrait mode to work. Consider getting a chromebook. If using additional monitors, you likely consider landscape / 2 page mode. However page turning sucks because you never can tell if one or two pages were turned.

I have a Chromebook, and it's my primary system now.  In fact, I'm typing this response on my Chromebook. 

Alas, ChromeOS is not supported by MobileSheets.  So I've resorted to my old Windows tablet.  The more experience I've had with it, the more I think I should try a large Windows tablet in landscape mode and with two-page display.  It would be heavier/bulkier to cart around, but I think would provide the display qualities I need.  So I'm now trying to figure out exactly what size that should be.

I don't want people to get the wrong idea when they read that. MobileSheets absolutely does support ChromeOS - lots of users are running MobileSheets on Chromebook devices. It isn't a native ChromeOS app - that much is true, because then it would have to be a web application. The app generally works just fine though.
