Inserting one PDF inside another...???
#1
As a choir, we are currently rehearsing Mozart's Mass in C Minor (Peter's Edition). Our MD had decided to insert a different version of "Osanna". I have PDF copies of the complete work and the modified Osanna. Is it possible to insert the new Osanna PDF inside the original PDF or will I need to come out of the original, load the modified version, and then go back into the original?

Many thanks

Yes, you can do that. Long press the piece on the library screen, tap "Edit Piece", go to the Files tab, tap the page order field, then tap the icon with three dots in the thumbnail after which you want to insert the pdf and tap "Insert File". Then select the other PDF and it will be inserted after that thumbnail.

The suggestion works well with individual files (pdf), but how to merge files to a song, if the wanted "extension file" is generated by csv-import?

I can select the "leader-file" (I want to extend) as described above. Doesn´t matter if it is a single pdf or imported by *csv.
But if I´m going to add an "extension file", which is imported/generated by csv, I just can import the whole pdf,
from which the wanted "extension file" is generated. I can´t find any way to import just this single "extension file".

Of course, it is possible to select the wanted pages of the whole pdf, mean´s reduce the whole pdf to the wanted file,
but it´s a little bit tricky (to search the wanted pages in the whole pdf.....)

Is there an easier way?

thx in advance,
e.k.

Keep in mind that a PDF is copied into MobileSheets' data folder only once. Several songs from a fakebook are just links to different pages of the fakebook PDF.
After songs have been imported via CSV import there's no difference to songs that have been imported using other methods.
A song consists of one or several file(s) and a database entry containing meta data for the song.
To find out which pages from what file belong to a song take a look at the files tab of the song editor. Clicking the (i) to the right of the filename shows the full path, which pages are used is shown in PageOrder

e.k. - I'm not sure if I fully followed that, but you can modify the page order for a song created through a csv import, add the additional PDF at the end of the thumbnails, tap the three dots at the top right and select "Save as new PDF" so that it doesn't modify the shared PDF.

Thanks for the fast answers,

merging files to a song I goto "rearrange pages", tap the 3 dots right/below the desired single page and can choose:

- insert file
           - local file
           - google drive
           - system file browser

- insert blank page or template
           - .........

- insert file from library (*)
           - select file (filter: collection, source, key; search:....; expand all, collapse all)

- view page
           - ............

(*)  One would expect here a possibility to select a song from the "usual library screen" (as shown if I open MS with all the songs, tabs, filters,....).
Here appears only a very reduced possibility to access files. CSV-generated files are shown (-> expand all), but are not selectable, just the whole pdf
(from which the csv-file is generated) is selectable.

Maybe a suggestion for future?
open song/files/rearrange page/3dots/insert file from library ---> open "usual library screen"
So, merge of songs are independent of their origin (pdf, csv,....).

Summarized:
I assume the information of a csv-generated song is available, otherwise it couldn´t be shown in the song list.....
I can select a csv-generated song in the usual library screen, but why is no additional (*) "insert file/song from library"

......no idea, what this means for efforts/code....or, where I´m wrong.........just a user.....

thx, e.k.

That is not possible. The library screen is not set up to be used like a reusable component that I can just throw into a UI for a different purpose. Also, the reason it's set up that way is you are not selecting a song - you are selecting a specific file. Songs can have multiple files in them, so the UI lets you pick which of those files to add. The feature is fairly limited right now, and you can't select a range of pages to add from an existing file in the library. It's just meant to be a way to merge PDFs. I'll expand the feature more in the future, but I needed to see if it was even something users would make use of before spending even more time developing it. One minor enhancement I'll probably look into adding sooner is respecting the page order for the file that was selected, so that the entire PDF isn't added (which would make it unusable with large PDFs imported through csv files). Another thing I may consider is switching the UI to show songs more like the "Find Song" dialog which is similar to the library screen in appearance, but if the song has multiple files under it, I would then have to pop up another dialog asking the user which of those files should be selected. This just gets messy because the UI currently lets you selected multiple files at once, which is nice, but if I have to pop up a dialog like that, the information for which file was selected would be hidden from the user, as the library style UI doesn't show file information. Or perhaps I change the dialog to only allow the selection of a single song/file, and the user would just have to load it multiple times to select multiple files, as it seems unlikely that a user would be doing that anyways.

Mike, thank you for your detailed reply.

I withdraw my question, it´s not worth the efforts. I´m going to use the suggestions in the previous posts,
´cause it´s not needed more frequently, just sometimes, no real problem.

best regards, e.k.
