I have several students and usually I create a collection for each one containing the pieces or exercises that they are working on. 
Very often I use the same piece, etude etc for several students but the annotations are always different for each student. 
Is there a way to use the same piece but associate the specific set of annotations to each particular student and also include it in his/her collection without having to create a duplicate custom piece for each student?

You can utilize layers, but otherwise, no, the "song versioning" feature that I've mentioned quite a bit on the forums is how I plan to solve that long term. My goal is to get that major update done this year at some point.
