Auto-selection of backup file location
#1
I see that a change was made in the latest version of MSP to always assume the most recent file location for the backup file. May I complain?

I always do a local file backup, and then immediately after a backup in a Dropbox folder I've called Mobile Sheets Backups. My memory is not so good, but this used to be easy. I think I was always offered file locations of local or Dropbox, and if I chose dropbox, the location I wanted came up. Now I just get the local file offered, and if I click the folder icon to choose something else, I get a bunch of options, but I don't recognize any of them. Well, it does show my previous backup, not in a folder (well, called "Root - storage -emulated - 0"). I don't know what that means, but if I click Root, like I do when I change the location from which I want to download a file from a Dropbox folder, it says I don't have access. If I select the existing file from January, which is not the local backup I just did today on March 1, I see that the one in Dropbox was not updated, so I don't know what that I supposedly updated was. That one after the update when I said ok to replace it, still shows the January date.

I don't seem to be getting any option to save the backup where I used to save it, in my folder for external backups that I created on Dropbox. I want a backup there in case I lose my tablet and from which to update the the most recent backup to my phone.

Am I not understanding something, or have I lost the ability to do an external backup, or to do it where I want to do it?
It's sort-of beside the point that I never want to save the backup where I just saved it, as I always save to a local then an external file.

Thanks for any help here.

Sorry, I like this change   ;-)

Android seems to be quite ugly if you want to navigate into folders on different locations.

I see two options:
1. Local backup only in Mobile Sheets, and copy outside of the app to Dropbox.
My tablet offers such a possibility in the file manager
2. Using a syncing tool that does the job of copying the local file to Dropbox

I think Mobile Sheet should remember the user's choice... The more users there are, the more complicated it is to change.

The only thing I changed is that MobileSheets will remember the last used local file path, and it will prepopulate the backup dialog with a path pointing the same directory as the last backup file but with a new name. This has no impact on the functionality when using cloud services. However, the dialog was always set up so that, if a user selected a local location, for example, and then tapped the folder icon again, it would automatically select "Local File" as the user had already picked a local file path. So the new logic I added to remember the file path doesn't present the user with an option to pick a different source if they previously backed up to a local file location, as the dialog thinks the user already picked a local file location. So I'll have to change or remove the logic and let the user always pick the source.

On a side note, just tap the cloud icon in the file browser, then Dropbox if you want to switch to Dropbox.

Thanks, Mike. That's not just a side note. That totally solves my problem. I don't even remember now how I used to switch between a local file and the Dropbox folder.

OK, now that I have done the backup to Dropbox, I just tested starting a backup for a local file and the option to select local file, Dropbox and two other options comes up. Perfect.

Side note - I didn't get notified yesterday of this reply. I know I had ticked "Subscribe and receive email notification of new replies"; that's still ticked now.

I'm glad to hear that. I am going to change the code for 3.9.15 so that users always can pick a different destination even if the path was prepopulated with a value.

I'm just commenting that I did get notified of today's reply.

And that sounds like a perfect solution - to default to the previous backup path but always make it easy to change that. Well, now that you've taught me to read icons, it's easy enough.
