14 inch tablets
#1
Hi everyone.
I have been looking at the Nxtpaper 14 inch tablet.
It looks ideal, especially with the screen ratio.

It has some features that I am not bothered about, like the eink modes.

However...
I have seen some other 14 inch tablets like the flycoay 14 or the deemwolf 14. I think these may be generic Chinese tablets just rebranded.
These are a bit cheaper and also look a bit more powerful.

Has anyone used these and what do you think of them.

I use the TCL Nxtpaper 14 since one month, buyed at the "big A.....", I´ll give you a short personal review.

First,
if you want to buy it via A....., whatch the prices, they changes every 2-3 days. Today the price is € 546,25,....rather high.
Watch out, there are offers about 420,00, but it´s not clear if these are refurbished and always without cover and pen.
I bought the full offer tab+pen+cover+charger.

Why I bought it:
There are situations where up to 3 musicians have to look at one tablet -> the bigger the better.
And this is the one and only reason, I just use it for mobilesheets (mike should get a fee from TCL). It´s to big just "for fun".

The tab works as expected, but don´t expect a lot of individual settings. This reminds me more to a (samsung) tab 15 years ago, approximatly.
(despite Android Version 14).

Pen works ok, magnetic. You can adhere it on the side of the cover. BUT: it is very weak. A small rubber band is included, just has no sense, because
it is not reasonable usable. (I expected a position as on the pictures, but failed). Obviously it´s not easy to get the pen as a spare part. So, watch out the pen.

The three nxtpaper modes work, especially if you are using it a long time the paper mode is a pleasant mode (eye gently).

Sound: ok, the built-in booster doesn´t convince me.

Annoying: if you change the display mode a sound will be played, it´s not possible to disable it (just if you set volume to 0).
Needs nobody.

Charging with the delivered charger: fast, app. 1%/min (30%->100% app 80 min)
A full accu works about 8-10 hours (app. the same time as a e.g. Samsung S7; used with mobilesheets, rehearsal)

No SD-Slot, no SIM-Slot.
(I - usually - use just tabs with SD-Slot, in case of a tab´s defect, I just have to replace the SD-Card to another tab)

All other things are as you can expect from a contemporary tablet. "Power" is enough for my usage
(app. 5500 songs, backup file is app. 10GB incl. audio), mobilesheets works fluent, no jerky/or whatelse....

The screen ratio is 3:2, matches DIN-A4 almost perfect.

Summarized:
If you really need a 14" tab for mobilesheets/scores/..... it´s ok. My experience is, a 12.4" tab is big enough for most of users,
My main tablet is 12,4".

Boox has a line of Android based E-readers that are 13.3" not 14".  Mobilesheets makes a special version for E-readers that Mike sells on his own store front.  Mike want to give one of them a whirl.

the Note Max is newer but it does not have a backlight.  The Tab X is older but does have an adjustable backlight.  I almost pulled the trigger on the Note Max but without the lighting it is a no go for me.  Maybe next year Boox will get it right.

I have a special eye on the no more really new Samsung S8/S9 Ultra devices, yielding a 14.6" display. They are (rather) frequently offered for less than 500 EUR on the German 2nd hand markets.
Sometimes the price tag even begins with a 3.  Big Grin

With my eyes growing older I'll eventually buy two of them to (re-) create a two-sided display, as I did some time before with my old but still working well 12.2" Samsungs, see https://www.zubersoft.com/mobilesheets/f...l#pid27658

Lately I replaced the wooden frame and the metallic hinge by 3d printed TPU structures, which reduced the overall thickness and adds to device safety against pushes off the stand, see http://linguadapt.de/special/privat/tabl...235258.jpg . The next iteration step (for the larger tablets) will additionally see a separate compartment for the pen that gives free access to it when the "book" is opened, and automatically closes when the hinge is closed. We'll see ...

Hope whe find an affordable A4 (14 inches) tablet in 2025, no needs for sound.
Color is intersting but B&W is efficient I think

By the way, what's the utility of sound or audiop files in a sheet tablet ? Huh

Yes, but who cares about efficiency in that respect? As long as the usual color displays last for 8+ hours there is no sense in excluding one technology relative to another one. Okay, there may be a point w/r/to weight of the tablet. But typically the instruments we carry the note tablets for are massively heavier than the tablets.  Wink

(If you are concerned about the energy consumption by itself: just drink one cup of coffee less per week, that saves about 40-50 Wh  Tongue)

Cheers,
Petra

Nothing to do with the weight, but seems to me B&W reading tablet are better outside in sunny or difficult situation ?

Readability in bright sunshine is a point, indeed.

I assume that the newer Samsung color tablets are quite well-behaving in that respect. But this is a point to test individually before buying!

It´s a feature. Someone like/want it, other not.
Mobilesheets allows the combination of audio files and sheetmusic in a very pleasant way.
Just try it!
