copy and pasting in MS
#1
Hi Mike,

I was caught again in the copy/paste/embed annotation trap.

As I have mentioned before I try to avoid to change the original PDF and don't embed anything for this reason.

But I again changed and "damaged" a PDF unwittingly because I copied and pasted a part of the PDF/picture (I wanted to paste a second repeat over the first).

I noticed it only because I used the same page in the song at another place because of the repeat (and the first repeat was gone and replaced by the second there).

Maybe I should have known and we've discussed this, but I wasn't aware anymore and treated the copy/paste of a segment of the pdf like copy and pasting an annotation which in hindsight is clear it isn't since you can't save all the cut images in the database.

But to avoid something like that (and in case I again forget) I'd really like a warning before something is pasted and irreparably embedded and changed in the pdf (I had go to a backup and swap the source pdf to restore the deleted (by pasting over) notes.
Can you consider to do that?

I can consider it. I'll then have to make sure there is a "Don't warn me again" checkbox on the warning dialog so that it doesn't become a source of irritation for users. That also means I need to have a way to bring back the warning if someone checks the box but wants the warning back later (meaning a new setting in the annotation settings dialog). I also need the translations for all 19 languages, although lately I've been lazy about getting accurate translations and have just been using auto-generated translations with DeepL. The real question is - when do I warn the user? Before saving changes? When pasting the snippet? I'm thinking an OK/cancel selection before saving makes the most sense, but if someone mindlessly clicks OK and ignores the dialog, I can't do much about that, whereas if I warn when it's pasted, they still have an opportunity to reverse the potential change.

Thank you.

I was thinking before pasting (and of course a checkbox for "do not show that warning again" which can be re-enabled in the settings").

Something like "You're about to change the PDF file of the song which can't be undone after leaving the edit screen. Do you want to continue?"

If you need help with the German translation just ask.
