There is a help page for the Android Transfer app which you might have missed:
https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2840804 This has worked for a number of different android tablets over the past few years without any problems. I hope you find a solution.

AFAIK, MTP should work out of the box, without the need for 3rd party apps.
