How do you create a desktop shortcut for MS? (I can't file the app's .exe file to create a shortcut to it.)

I just tested it and it worked nicely - just drag & drop from the start menu.

Well, the possibility to drag and drop from the startmenu to the desktop has been there since the days of Win95 IIRC.
