The metronome
#1
As I become more familiar with using MS, I'm starting to use features which I didn't really think I needed.

The last one was linking audio to the music charts. As I don't solo gig, I never though this would be needed by me. However, at rehearsals, I'm constantly playing reference tracks for the band to get an idea of a particular feel or groove I'm looking for, so the ability to link that reference track directly to the chart has, in fact, proved extremely useful.

My current foray is into the metronome - and here I have to confess total defeat. Obviously, having the tempo pre-programmed is very useful, but what I can't do is make it work for me!

I call up a chart, determine the tempo, set the (visual) display and start the metronome - all OK up to here. Then I save the settings and close the chart. Next time I open the chart - in either display or performance mode - there is no metronome to be seen.

What I want (and I thought this is what is supposed to happen) is for the metronome to automatically come up and display with the chart, to give me a visual guide to the count.

I feel sure I've missed a trick somewhere, but I'm blowed if I can work out what that is? Doing a search revealed this as something I have (in a roundabout way) asked before - http://zubersoft.com/mobilesheets/forum/...me#pid2221 - maybe this is something that will appear in v5?

OK - here's the question.

With Performance Mode disabled, opening a chart reveals a title bar at the top of the page. On the left of this bar is a circle, enclosing a downward pointing triangle. Touch this and a new menu opens up. One of the items on this new menu is 'Metronome'. If I touch this, what should I expect to happen? In my case, it is absolutely nothing.

All the other menu functions seem to do what I would expect, but not the metronome.

At the moment, there is no way to access the metronome if you have performance mode enabled. Additionally, there is no way to auto-start the metronome. The metronome option that is accessible by tapping the circle at the top left of the screen is actually the setting that is supposed to auto-start the metronome when changing songs in a setlist, but it's currently not working as intended.

Version 5.0.0 is adding new features such as the ability to auto-start the metronome when a song loads, and to have a count-in. You can have the metronome count-in for a certain number of beats and then stop. I'm also putting in place the ability to turn pages after a certain number of beats of the metronome, and change tempos after a certain number of beats (for songs that change rhythms part way through). Hopefully with these changes you will have what you need.

Mike, that would cover my simple requirements, plus options for the more intensive MS users. I await v5 with bated breath Smile .

Sounds very good and could possibly eliminate the count ins I typically record in front of backing tracks.

gman,

Are you thinking that the end of the metronome count-in would trigger the audio playback? At the moment, there is nothing connecting the two, so you would have to manually activate the media playback when the count-in finished (which you could do through the quick button menu I'm adding at the bottom right). I could add the ability to play the audio at the end of the metronome count-in if enough users would benefit from it though.

Thanks,
Mike

This is not a big issue either way. Auto, play after count in would be the ultimate for me but have no idea if others would use.

Would the timing work so the song starts at the right point after the count in. Is the timing "perfect" on the audio so it would sync up right with the metronome. Unless the audio was sequenced, I would think it would drift from the metronome. (Just a couple of thoughts FWTAW).

There is no way I could guarantee a perfect sync due to the audio latency on the Android OS. Buffering would need to occur on the audio, and there are a lot of factors that could affect how long the audio takes to start playing. If I had my own audio engine for audio playback, I could probably get this to work, but I'm still leveraging Google's audio engine (I just provide the path to the audio file and let it figure out how to play it).

I don't think we need "perfection". If I had a tune where playing on 1 of the first best is required I would pre record the count in in the studio. The count in for me is to get a feel for the tempo before the track starts. If you build in this feature future hardware may be more capable. Your port to windows might give us reason to get better hardware and still use MS?
