... stage lights were creating such a glare on the Samsung screen that I could not see a lot of the notes ... I guess I'll try out some non-reflective screen covers, but those things worry me that they might cut back on brightness and make the stylus not work well.

I've had real good results with a non-glare screen protector on a Lenovo tablet.  Very great reduction in glare without any noticeable reduction in brightness.  I usually use my finger but occasionally use a stylus + both seem to work well.  I notice a pretty slight decrease in the screen's sensitivity to touch, but it's not enough to be annoying to me.  YMMV as they say.
