I successfully imported 622 songs and set Custom as the "Format:" field and the custom field was populated as expected. Now I want to be able to do the same with Custom Group so that I can view that as a tab.

My folders are similar to this:

French Trad
    Bourree a 2 Temps
    Bourree a 3 Temps
    Branles
    etc.

I deleted the 662 songs so that I could re-import them, setting the custom group metadata to the folder name. So on the batch import screen, I selected all check boxes. I had renamed the custom group to Dance Type and when I selected that on the "Format:" drop-down, it populated the field with %CUSTOM_GROUP%.


I selected the import folder as dropbox, found the folder called "French Trad", selected it, and started the import. I expected the field "Dance Type:" to contain the folder name where the file came from, but the Dance Type field was blank. Does Custom Group not get set during an import? If not, perhaps it shouldn't be an option under "Enter directory format".

The option to populate metadata from a directory does not consider the root folder under which you are importing - it applies to the folders under the selected folder. So in your example, you would need to import the folder containing the "French Trad" folder, not the "French Trad" folder itself.

The folders imported are under the folder I selected. The "French Trad" folder has no parent; it is top-level.

When I select %CUSTOM% or %SOURCE_TYPE%, it did work. It seems when I select %CUSTOM_GROUP% that the field "Dance Type" (renamed from %CUSTOM_GROUP%) remains blank. %SOURCE_TYPE% worked, so that is what I will use for now.

I just tested this and it worked perfectly fine. This is the example:

1) I batch import, check "Populate metadata from directories" and select "%CUSTOM_GROUP%" as the only entry
2) I select a folder named "FolderA" which has two child folders "CustomGroupA" and "CustomGroupB". There is one PDF under each of those folders.
3) Let the batch import proceed, then edit the first song that is created and verify that "CustomGroupA" is listed under the Custom Group field.
