Gig Performer and MobileSheets
#1
I’m a GP user converting from Camelot Pro.
I’ve seen some articles and videos showing MobileSheets and GP working together.

Absolutely sold - downloaded MS and POW! converted almost 80.pdf lead sheets in seconds.  Nice!  I also love the auto scroll function! Look Ma, no hands!

I’m getting used to the MS functionality and find it very intuitive, but can’t seem to send program changes from Gig Performer to pull up songs on MS. Read both manuals, watched tutorials. Fiddled with settings in both apps - no dice.

I’ve set up a few song files in MS with random MIDi PC numbers (1, 2, 3…) using the vanilla MIDI connection on channel 1 for each song. I’ve set also up the same in GP at the setlist level (should it be rack space?).

I’m at that place where I’m frustrated and it’s gonna be something forehead slappingly obvious. When I solve it.

Thanks in advance for all “did you try…” questions. I promise to share the resolution to help someone else here.

I'm so happy to hear that MobileSheets has been working well for you so far. As far connecting to Gig Performer, to start, I just want to verify one thing - did you go to Settings->MIDI Settings->Configure MIDI Connections, and connect to the input and output ports for Gig performer? If they are both running on the same machine, you may have to use something like loopMIDI to forward commands between the two. If you've done this already, then I can list out all the steps for sending commands between the two. If you did not actually establish the connection between the two, that would be why you've been unable to send the messages.

Thank you Mike. I just selected MIDI for the ports. Both apps are running on the same PC, so do I need LoopMIDI?  Looks like LoopMIDI is programmed for Windows 7-10.  I’m running 11 64 bit.

Thanks!

Quick update.  I’ve downloaded and installed LoopBe1 on my PC.

https://nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html

I can see LoopBe1 now in the MS MIDI config. Options and have it selected for both input and output.  I have added the same MIDI assignments to a song file.  Feels like I have MS cooking correctly but still can’t manage to hit it from set list mode in GP.  I’ve likely made some sort of rookie mistake because in MS when I select “test MIDI”, I light up the MIDI indicator light in GP, so they’re at least on speaking terms. I also see LoopBe1 in the GP MIDI ports. So close…

loopMIDI works just fine on Windows 11. LoopBe1 should accomplish the same goal though.

I'll run through my own test and hopefully it will be helpful for you:

1) I opened loopMIDI
2) I went to Settings->MIDI Settings->Configure MIDI Connections and checked both the input and output ports for loopMIDI (the output port just shows up as "MIDI")
3) I opened Gig Performer, went to Options->MIDI Ports and verified that it was connected to the input and output ports for loopMIDI
4) I clicked the Setlists section, right-clicked the Verse for Song 1, clicked Song Part Properties, click Edit for the MIDI messages, changed the MIDI Message type to Control Change, and set the CC # to 9 and the CC Value to 5 (these are just dummy values)
5) I right-clicked a song in MobileSheets, went to the MIDI tab, tapped the + icon, set it to "Control Change" entered 10 for the number and 5 for the value, and enabled "Load Song on Receive".
6) I tapped OK, tapped OK to save the changes, and then clicked the song section in the setlist in GP. The song is then loaded in MobileSheets

That is just one example of something you can do. You can also go to Settings->MIDI Settings, enable "Allow Page Control with Pitch Bend", and then send "Pitch Bend" messages from Gig Performer to control page changes in MobileSheets. The pitch bend value you send determines what page is switched to in MobileSheets. So that's another way to handle it. It all just depends on what your goal is.

Thank you so much for the help!
I’m flummoxed.
I replicated the steps and couldn’t get the two connected.
I used a test set list I’ve been playing with, will try creating a fresh one and repeat.

If loopMIDI is good with Win 11, I’ll try installing that so I’m replicating completely.

Sorry for the trouble. The good thing is once solved, the fix (on my side) will be repeatable.

Let me know if it works any better for you with loopMIDI. I'll do my best to help however I can.

Thanks all.  I went quiet because of a medical issue with my daughter.  I am not resolved, but will continue here in a day or two once we get stable on the family front.

Thank you, Mike for sticking with this one and for your concern. Daughter had emergency gall bladder surgery on Tuesday, so a long week. She’s recovering beautifully so we’re all really pleased with that.

In other (good) news, I got MS and GP working together today.  Super cool! I did replicate your test above and after some fiddling and a move from loopMIDI back to loopB1, I finally got a command through from GP to my MS test set. There was much rejoicing.  I was able to take your CC 9/5 and address a couple of other songs with 10/5 and 11/5.  It was repeatable!

My critical user mistake was using the wrong song properties menu in GP.  I was using the one near the bottom of the setlist menu for PC, when I noticed the properties menu at the VERY bottom of the menu. Here, I set up a CC change (9/5) on channel 16 through loopB1 and was immediately in business.

I have a bunch of songs to set up now that I have it cooking. What’s a good clean practice for assigning CC messages?  Use unused #s and build from there? I’m thinking of just leaving 9/5, going back to 9/1 and fwd. to 9/127. Is there a smarter way to think about it?

Now, I’m pressing on to display settings, auto scroll, etc. I’m using a foot switch to advance through song/song parts in GP, my wish would be to have each song auto scroll in MS once I advance to it in GP. Had  this working tonight, but quite a bit more playing and experimenting is needed.

Really loving this product, Mike! With all of my band’s music now in GP, this is the last step to migrating away from Camelot Pro.  It’s been a journey since April, but with a 1/10/25 gig looming, the pressure to be ready is healthy and totally do-able.

Thanks again!

I'm not sure I can answer what is the best practice for that, but you really can use whatever values or messages you want. There are no limitations. Just pick something that is easy for you to manage and organize. Maybe some other users can provide their thoughts.

I'm so glad you are enjoying using MobileSheets so far! I'm always here to help if you run into issues.
