Recommend a 4:3 Android tablet?
#1
Music
I just bought the Lenovo P12 tablet, but was disappointed. When I view sheet music on it, the bottom 15% of the screen remains empty. I'd love to find a table with the right aspect ratio for 8-1/2 x 11 inch sheet music!

There aren't too many Android tablets that have a 4:3 aspect ratio. The BOOX e-ink tablets are some of the few Android-based tablets that use that aspect ratio. The Samsung S8+/S9+ have a 16:10 aspect ratio, which isn't too far off from 4:3. Hopefully other users will chime in with their thoughts.

Oneplus Pad Pro has a 7:5 ratio which is not too far off either ...

A little off-topic but in an attempt to be helpful can I suggest that you also look at the screen resolution. I have an iPad and this year bought a really cheap Android tablet. The low resotion (600 pixels wide) is so low that my songs are far more difficult to read than on my iPad. So, nothing about the screen aspect ratio you are asking about but one more thing to bear in mind to help you choose the best tablet that will work for you.

I know you're looking for an android. Just an alternative idea. I have always used android phones and probably always will, but I went with an iPad specifically to use with mobilesheets 4:3 ratio. I had decided that the 4:3 was non-negotiable for me. And I wanted the large size close to the side of paper.

I bought the new iPad Air 13" that came out in May and have been very happy with it. The iPad Air 13" is the first large-size device Apple has released that's not in their Pro line-up and is quite a bit cheaper than the iPad Pro of the same size. It took awhile to learn the different way Apple does everything, but google was helpful!

There are some features only available in android (such as being able to natively play midi files from within MS), So it may not be an option for you.

If you stick with the longer skinnier androids, I read on a post that some people have found a way to utilize the extra space at the bottom for notes or extra annotations. Can't find it now.

THANKS! I didn't know about this tablet, but after reading your post, I researched it and bought it! Walmart offers the current 13.3 inch version for $549. It's called "BOOX 13.3-inch E-ink Tablet, 128GB SSD, Android 11, Wi-Fi, Black". It has Android 11 unfortunately, but is $100 cheaper than the forthcoming model, which will have Android 13 but isn't available yet.

Thanks! I checked it out. The biggest size is 12.1 inches which left my concerned, so I bought a Boox 13.3 inch tablet, which has a 4:3 ratio and is bigger.

Wow, wonderful to know that I can buy a new 13 inch ipad for $699. I'd been looking at the Pro models, and almost bought a used one, but felt nervous about that. This is a terrific option!

I believe the Lenovo P12 is a 16:10 ratio which is close to 4:3. Strange that part of the bottom is cutoff. Maybe double check settings in both the tablet and Mobile Sheets so that "full screen"
is enabled? Is the 15% at the bottom the task bar or just blank? Regardless, in spite of the 15% loss at the bottom, a 12.3" tablet with the 16:10 ratio should still be way better than a 10" tablet with a 16:9 ratio, or the overpriced iPads

On another forum, this was posted. Might help with a P12
For optimal screen size, Lenovo Tab 11.
Settings ->
 One vision ->
Tap Window Buttons and Window Menus ->
 Tap Full Screen Window button ->
Turn this off.
I use this tablet for Mobile Sheets music reading

The recently TCL NxtPaper 14. A 14,3 inch screen. 4:3 ratio. The European A4 format. The tablet has a E-Ink look and paper feeling. You can change it to a color screen by pressing one button. Althoug the tablet is not an E-ink, but a normal Android (14) tablet.
At the moment the price at the internet is between 350-400 euros. With a pen and Case round 475 euros.

Using 12.3" Google's Pixel Slate tablet (Chromebook with Android 13) which has 3:2 ratio with pen support.
These are not made any more but very cheap 2nd hand.
With updates until June 2029.

3:2 is better than 4:3! Microsoft Surface has 3:2 ratio. Don't forget that all of the reading/notation apps have their editing bar across the bottom or top, covering over the top/bottom of the page of music when in annotation mode! I never would have gotten an iPad if I had known this. For me, this drastically interferes with writing and rehearsing, as the editing bar covers up part of the music (unless the music has big margins). So in 4:3 iPad, to write a quick mark on the bottom/top of a page, I have to enter annotation mode, then drag the page away from the editing bar, then write, and then exit annotation mode to continue rehearsing.

The Surface Pro is on my wish list mainly for using Mobile sheets:

Starting with the Surface Pro 8, the screen size is 13" with Windows 11. Cost is rather high, even on refurbished devices

Surface Pro 7 and below has a 12.3" display with Windows 10. Cost is much lower but may not be worth it.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who uses one or the other for Mobile Sheets and if size matters.
