Doable? Portrait external itor orientation, full screen 1 page fake book song sheet
#1
I'm trying to view a single page song sheet (in portrait orientation) , using my android samsung note 9 phone connected to an external hdmi monitor via a usb-c to hdmi cable, so a single page of the song takes up the entire screen.  Can MS do that?

You will likely run into an issue because the external monitor will be in a landscape orientation, and the tablet screen will show in portrait orientation (leading to a large amount of black space on either side). If you rotate the tablet into landscape, then it will most likely work better.

Thanks for the reply Mike.  This might not help,  but what I'm trying to do is view my song sheet in a full screen portrait orientation, with the monitor physically sitting in an upright portrait orientation.  My vision isn't great, but with the song sheet taking up the entire portrait oriented monitor, that makes the lettering of the lyrics & chords much larger.

Any way to do this?  TY

No, I don't believe so, as the output of the tablet will probably always be locked to landscape.

Is it that the hdmi signal coming out of the android cell phone or tablet is strictly landscape oriented?

If yes, would the fix for that be a converter device that would rotate the hdmi signal 90°, ending up in a full screen portrait oriented monitor ?  You know, you see those portrait oriented displays in supermarkets all the time.

I found something - could you take a look & see what you think?  Thanks either way ?

I still highly doubt that will work, and the first review states this:

I bought this as a way we could display a mobile app on a larger screen when doing demos. I was only able to get any image to mirror to the external monitor briefly and the image looked horrible. It was stretched to a weird ratio and made the image unreadable. After playing with the settings, it now won’t display anything on the external monitor. I followed instructions to reset the device, but still nothing.

It's up to you whether you want to try it though, as I've never used a converter device like that.

I did some references to scrcpy as a means to potentially accomplish this: https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy

However, I think the idea with that is to connect the tablet to a PC or laptop running that, and then PC or laptop is connected to the monitor.

See this if you want an example of what you will likely encounter: https://android.stackexchange.com/questi...ble-screen

Hey Mike -

Yeah, thanks so much for digging into this... I really appreciate it!  The stuff you dug up would've been WAY beyond my technical prowess.

Although I'm really disappointed this application just AIN'T gonna happen, I totally get why it was a real stretch, but just not possible.

It's too bad, 'cause I think there'd be a huge user audience for it out there.

Am I correct, that it's got to do with how the hdmi signal is hard-coded in the originating device's hardware? - just a lay-person's guess.

Thanks again, you saved me countless hours on a wild goose chase.

It's controlled by the Android OS. Some users that have a custom ROM and unrestricted access to the OS configuration have found ways to get around this, but that won't help most users.

Please forgive me, Mike, if I should be asking this question in a different part of the forum - I'm new at this -

If I use a Windows laptop, will it provide the solution I am looking for?

Yes, it would work just fine on a Windows laptop, as the MobileSheets application window can dragged over to the external monitor and enlarged to use the full screen.

Cool Cool Shy

Thank you.  I'll start digging into the Windows version.
