MIDI problems after migrating to Android from Windows
#1
HI everyone,

I'm hoping this is an easy fix! I'm not an expert in MIDI so please excuse any errors in terminology.

I've been using Mobile Sheets for several years now on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

Each song on Mobile sheets is set to send MIDI commands on song load to my Line 6 HX Stomp XL guitar/bass multi effects pedal - changing patches and cc.

MIDI is sent direct to the XH Stomp via a standard printer cable. I've never had any problems with it.

I've always had mobile sheets on a Samsung A9 tablet as a back up but never had to use it with the MIDI element - I always assumed with the correct cable it would just work exactly the same way.

My Surface Pro is old and has 0% battery capacity so I decided to buy a brand new Lenovo P12 to replace it as the screen is a similar size - I have the following problems with it. These problems are exactly the same on my Samsung A9.

* If I connect it to the the HX Stomp with a USB C to USB B cable it works and sends messages correctly for about 3-5 seconds but then ceases to work at all.

* If I use a USB C to 5 Pin MIDI cable I get consistent operation for cc messages but no changes to the program/patch
    - there is a light on this cable which shows when midi is being sent out. It does light up when program changes are sent.

I'm sure there must be lots of people using mobile sheets on android and sending midi to an external device - I'm not sure what I'm doing differently!

Can anybody help?

I would like you to stick with the USB-C to USB-B cable, as you absolutely should be able to get that to work. I'd like you to do the following:

1) Go to Settings->MIDI Settings->Configure MIDI Connections
2) Switch the MIDI library to "Google"
3) When the input and output ports for the HX Stomp show up, tap them and it should show "Connected" next to each
4) Now test out the MIDI functionality

Let me know if that works any better. If not, you can also try the third MIDI library, which is high-performance USB. The reason I support multiple libraries is because there are so many combinations of Android and MIDI devices and I have found that different users will have success with different MIDI libraries.

Thanks for your quick reply!

I don't have a midi settings option on any of my 3 android tablets.

I've enabled developer options and turned on usb debugging

Ive also set default usb configuration to MIDI

Am I missing something or is there anything else I can try?

The settings I mentioned are in MobileSheets, not in your tablet settings. Open MobileSheets, tap the three dots at the top right, then Settings, then MIDI Settings.

You could test to put in a "Pause" command between each other command.
My setting is 0.5 sec.

Thank you, that's a handy tip. I did always wonder if there would be an issue with commands being sent simultaneously and I guess this would be the answer

100% agree.
Its a wonderful program, and my difficulties disussed here are nothing compared to the overall usability.
