I understand, but I'm still not convinced. Anyway, it's your decision. 
I'll have to postpone sharing setlists as MSS files with the members of my band until the new solution is available.

Why do you need to delay? If I make the change I proposed, I would copy the value from the existing song ID field into the synchronization ID field, because otherwise it would break the linking for users that are utilizing it correctly. It won't fix the issue for existing users that used it incorrectly, but it would at least stop future problems.

Another approach is I could add a global setting that indicates whether song ID is matched on. If I leave it off by default, then I would have no issues adding support for sorting on song ID or adding the other changes you want. Users that to link their songs by ID would then have to enable that setting.
