Surface 11 stability
#1
Hi Mike,

I had my first ever crash mid-performance yesterday, nothing irredeemable but a pity.

Specs are:

Mobilesheets Version 3.9.17
Surface Pro 11
Windows 11 24H2
Snapdragon® X 10-core X1P64100 @ 3.40 GHz  3.42 GHz
16GB RAM

I have enable crash reports on.

I can make Mobilesheets crash if I very quickly turn through lots of pages and back and forth. Occasionally I also have problems with coming in and out of the annotation editor. I had "Utilize GPU for the Annotation Editor" turned on and I'm going to experiment with turning it off. Render preference is set to "Speed".

I'm aware of the issues with ARM stability and your quandary regarding whether to make a true ARM version or not, but my question is whether or not I can do anything to improve stability other than the above and whether or not you received any useful crash reporting?

Many thanks as usual,

ben

Hi,

Just to say after turning off "Utilise GPU" it's not crashing in the same circumstances. Some of my scores are very heavily annotated so I wonder if that's the root of the problem? It's getting heavy usage at the moment so I will report back on stability next week.

Many thanks,

Ben

Ben,

I'm sorry to hear you've run into those issues (especially during a performance). I'm glad that you are no longer experiencing crashes with that setting off. That would point to an issue with the skia rendering when using GPU rendering instead of CPU rendering (as the GPU rendering is more complex). I definitely think this is related to the x64 emulation on an ARM processor. I still would like to have a native ARM version again, but I still have a lot of issues to figure out (as I've mentioned elsewhere). The biggest thing I'm worried about is getting a lot of upset users if certain features disappear for them if they have an ARM device, as I have to remove support for some things in a native ARM version.

Hi Mike,

I've used it a lot again today and again no crashes so assume turning GPU off has done the trick. What I do occasionally notice is that I'll turn to a page and the annotations won't appear - if I move into edit mode, or even if I just navigate away and back to the page again the annotations reappear. No pressure from me regarding the ARM version as I appreciate you've got to balance user's needs / workload, I'm just happy that it seems to be stable for performances again with the current settings.

Again thanks for making such a terrific piece of software, couldn't do without it!

Best wishes,

Ben

I'll have to look into that - that's definitely strange behavior.  Happy the app is otherwise working well for you.
