remove unused audio files from the MobileSheets subdir structure
#1
Situation:
I'm using MobileSheets on a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet under Windows10.
  • I had an audio file (mp3) "audio1" connected to a sheet file.
  • Later on, I got another version of the same song's music.
  • So I removed "audio1" from the sheet file and connected "audio2".
  • However, as it seems, the now unused "audio1" file is still sitting in the MobileSheets database, in the subdir of the song where it was originally connected to.

Question:
How can I get rid of that unused file?
When I just delete it from the MobileSheets database subdir structure, using the windows file manager, would that lead to problems in MobileSheets?

Within MobileSheets I can't find any sort of audio file manager functionality, appart from the import / batch import and the connecting of audio files to songs.

Anyone has a hint?

Kind Regards
Andreas

Hi Andreas,
I haven't yet done it myself, but I think if you make sure to back up your library, including Audio Files, before deleting any of the unwanted files then you can always go back and resurrect your library if any problems occur!

Andreas,

Removing a file using the song editor in MobileSheets will not delete the file that has been removed. There isn't currently an option in the song editor to permanently delete a file and remove it from the song at the same time. So it's perfectly safe for you to delete the file after removing it from your song. If a song is deleted from the library, the files will be cleaned up. I just haven't added similar functionality to the song editor when removing an individual file as it's hard to know the user's intent. They may not want the file deleted if removing it. So I need to make this something that can optionally be triggered.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the clarification.

I see the problem. Especially when the user decided to use his own storage structure, he would probably dislike if you mess around with "his" files.

Easiest way would probably be to add a checkmark to the song editor, like "also remove the file", so it's up to the user to decide.
Default to "yes" when MS is handling the file structure, default to "no" when the user provides his own file structure.
Maybe something for the whish-list of new features?

Thanks for the super product and your support of it!

Best Regards
Andreas

I was wondering about this.
If you delete an audio file - then replace it with an audio file of the same name MS comes back with the file already exists.
Same if you remove and replace a sheet of the same name.

I tend to change the sheet with a different version number so I suppose there are many sheets still there one cannot see or manage.

I have not looked into the database - prefer to do things within MS.

A management function may be needed - to hoover up all unused sheets / and audio files.

Removing a PDF or audio file in MobileSheets does not currently delete that file. If you delete the song, then that can delete the files for you, but just removing a file doesn't delete it. One of the things I need to do is change the removal behavior so that the user is prompted to ask if they want to delete the file.
