I belong to several ukulele clubs and have specific albums for each club. I manage my own files. Occasionally I make a mistake and batch import a set of files without assigning them to an album. Is there some way (I haven't found) of selecting all the files that are not in any album?

Hello,
You can try the following:
1) Tap the circle with a downward arrow at the far right side of the filter bar to bring up the additional filters
2) Tap on the albums dropdown and set the top dropdown to "unassigned".
This should only show you songs that have not been assigned to an album.
