ChordPro & ABC
#16
If you leave "Let MobileSheets Manage my Files" on, then yet, MobileSheets will still enforce the folder structure it wants. If you turn that off, then import your files, then it will use your files from the same locations you imported them and it will never change that. So you can keep your ABC files separate. This only applies to Android. On Windows, set the storage location first, then copy your abc folder into the storage location, then import files from that folder and MobileSheets won't move the files. The same is true in the iPad version.

...just very lightly and humbly knocking on the door to ask if there is new info on the envisioned time line for abc/musicxml support?

thanks!

(insert imges / abc-format)

Hello all

I am new to MS and the chordpro format was the main reason I decided to use Mobilesheets.
Up until now I have been working with PDF files which are mostly text with chords on top.
For most songs I added the intro or maybe some bridges as images.
Unfortunately, I miss this feature very much, as there is no way to insert images, nor to insert the ABC format, although this already exists in the Chordpro format.
However, I would like to stay with the Chordpro format, as I play the same songs in several bands, but sometimes in a different key.
I have read in this forum that both customer requests are being worked on, but there is no information yet as to when this will be included in the version.

Otherwise I am very happy with MS.

I'm just struggling with the workload due to the recent issues with the Windows version. The chord pro changes all still underway, but I can't provide accurate estimates when I get sidetracked with fixing bugs, because I'm just a single developer, so if I'm working on fixing bugs, I'm not working on the new features. I don't want to promise to deliver something on a specific date, because I'll most likely get it wrong if unexpected issues come up or I have to stop working on it to address bugs.

Time has a way of passing, doesn't it? ;-) Anyways, it has been three months now, so just checking back to see if the issue has managed to move up the Todo list.

Thx!

ABC support has already been implemented and added for version 3.9.0. I'm just working on finishing the work for the companion app (porting it to an entirely new framework to support Linux and MacOS has been a tremendous undertaking). I just want all of these changes to be implemented at the same time as version 3.9.0 is introducing database changes that makes earlier versions incompatible which requires a new companion app version, so I figured this would be a good time to just introduce the redesigned companion app. It's just taken longer than expected as a lot of the UI code didn't port over as easily as I was hoping it would.

You know, I'm quite excited about that. I expected I would have to wait still a long time to use my ABC files in MSP, especially since I thought ABC support in chordPro would only include only some measures.

But I finally tested the chordPro binaries and was pleasantly surprised because  it seems to me because of Sciurius great implementation of Jef's abc2svg I just have to frame my ABC files with
Code:
{start_of_abc}
and
Code:
{end_of_abc}

and I can use them in chordPro including features like the ABC grid. Am I correct?

Wow.

So no additional support of ABC is necessary (as I previously thought)?

Mike, is it possible that you treat *.abc as *.cho files which already include the frame so ABC files don't have to be edited and can be used natively? Or did you think of that already.

Can't wait for the release. :-)

@BRX: I am confused about your remark " So no additional support of ABC is necessary (as I previously thought)?" I do not know anything (nor care) about Chord Pro, I just want an .abc file to be rendered just like a .pdf.

I did make a copy of one of my abcs, saved the copy as a .cho and added the frames you suggested. MSP would in the current version simply display the abc as text as is. I want to see the dots in staff notation and thought that that was what abc integration would mean. Am I wrong, or do we need the ChordPro detour to actually do the rendering then? How would ChordPro come into the game then? How could we use .cho and .abc identically if the former require a frame around the abc and the latter don't?

Apologies if this should be a stupid question (it probably is).

It is probably easier for MobileSheets to treat ABC files as a distinct kind of files. It is pure text, contains all relevant info like title, composer, key etc. No need to wrap it into a ChordPro song.

That is because ABC support has not yet been released.

ChordPro supports embedded ABC (with {start_of_abc}...{end_of_abc}). MobileSheets will support this in the next version.

Apart from this, MobileSheets could also support ABC as standalone files but I don't know if this is planned. The advantage of standalone ABC is that metadata from the ABC file can be used.

With version 3.9.0, I support ABC both in chord pro files (using {start_of_abc}{end_of_abc}) or as standalone files (with a .abc file extension).

@Mike Great!

@RAc As I wrote I tested with the chordPro binaries not with MS (and concluded the usage in the upcoming MS release.

Yes, I figured that much... I was just confused about BRXs post. Should just have waited for the release, apologies for the noise.

Mike, I'm seeing how much you have to do with customer support and hunting bugs, so I won't bother you with the question when the release 3.9. is due. :-)

But I'm curious. Which ABC interpreter are you using? abc2svg like chordpro? Or something different? Because if you don't use abc2svg, there are quite a few features that abc2svg has (and others don't).

This might be a reason for me to use chordpro to show ABC files for cases like showing a grid (and more). And then my request/question if the start of abc tags of chordpro might be assumed bei MS in some way will come up again.
